Normally people don't play via battlenet. As malydok said u should try using Garena (www.garena.com). Just to let you know: right now there are more than 205 000 people on Warcraft 3 channels. Standard maps aren't the most popular ones but so the custom ones such as Defense of the Ancients (DotA) or some Tower Defense (TD).
I usually play DotA or Legion TD with friends there but I also like playing 'normal' wc3, mostly as Night Elf or Undead.
