Hello guys,

my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6000) is getting to the end of it's time and I must say it has served me well. Some shop near to me is now selling the following Macbook for the small price of € 699. I was wondering if buying this laptop is a good idea, and if I can run office, etc. on this Macbook.
  • Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 Ghz
  • 3MB L2 Cache
  • 2GB DDR2 RAM
  • 160GB HD
  • NVIDIA 9400M
  • MacOSX 10.5
Posted Image

So what do you guys think I should do? I really like the idea of a mac, but I really don't know if it's something for me.
Also it would be nice to know if I need to also put windows on this macbook to run sof for example.

Thanks for the advise!

I don't buy laptops to game, and I could not care less about gaming. I can not imagine using an alienware fagget laptop.

Jesa was always the person who gave me good advice about laptops, but I somehow lost his messenger adress.. if someone could hook me up, or if Jesa could post his advice here himself.

if u wanna spend more money becuz u like apples then i would go for this 1 (700 is a good price for an apple). if money is not an issue, i would definitely go for a mac book pro. if u want to buy a good alternative then i would go for a sony who have the better models atm (if u compare it to other windows-running laptops)

If 700 is the maximum u want to spend, it will do what u ask from it. (office etc.)
It can run microsoft Office, works fine on osx.
Macbook pro is or air is better ofcourse.
Personally i'm apple fan, so i would go for apple.

my opinion is, mac is allright cuz it has a high endurance. it aint that great for what you get. you will get a better laptop for less money. problem is that a mac will last longer since apple creates programmes especially for mac. thats why it lasts longer, windows has several companies making software for windows, thats why it gets outdated. apple is expensive but lasts long. i would rather buy 1 laptop every 3 year than buy 1 macbook and have it for 6 years. and dont get me started on alienware jezus. overrated and way to expensive, get urself the same parts for less money and put them together urself, saves you 1/4. it just has a name cuz it brings out some nice mixes of allot of hardware. but you can combine them yourself for less so... + math, you will have some problems with software when you buy a macbook, not all windows software run on it. you can switch it to windows but it will cost you memory and thats not the reason you buy a macbook.

but thats just my opinion,

allways a pleasure math :)

it's funny because apple always marketed mac's as the really fun computers, but here everyone says buy it if you don't wanna play games, use it for business etc

+ it's mostly business' who buy macs because they are so expensive.. INNIT

I think €700 is not expensive. Especialy if you think I payed € 1200 or something for this HP Pavilion dv6000 when it just came out, which has served me well but all in all is a piece of shit laptop which couldn't even get me 60 FPS in sof.

If you really want a Mac, then you should get the Macbook Pro. I don't think any other Macs are worth it. Problem with the Macs is that a lot of windows applications don't work, so you might be limited in some of the things that you do. In my opinion, you can get a laptop thats way better for that amount of money though. But then again it all depends on what you would like to use it for. If you're gonna use it more for business, then you can go with this Mac since it will definitely last you a while. If you want a laptop for business, gaming and other stuff then I suggest you look around.

yuuuuuuuuuuuu mathy

I've been using a macbook (white) for 1,5 year now. Same setup as the one that's advertised, but different graphics card (Intel GMA X3100).
Personally, I'm very happy that I've switched to Mac. It's a lot easier to work with, you don't have to worry about viruses and it looks awesome. I see lots of people are saying you can get a cheaper and better laptop if you compose it yourself. That is probably true, but if you're gonna start doing that you should be sure you know what you're doing. Buying a Mac on the other hand is the perfect example of a "plug & play" product.

When it comes to adapting to mac, I think it's easier to go from a Windows pc to a macbook, than the other way around. Every time I use Windows now I get frustrated ;]
I use MS Office for Mac and I also have a Windows partition. That means that when booting the computer, I can choose to work with Mac and Windows. Mac is excellent but at school we sometimes use freeware, designed by small companies, and they usually don't have a mac variety.
I don't know who said having a Windows partition slows down your computer, but that's bs. The only thing you lose is a couple of gb's of your hard drive. If you'd use PARALLELS (meaning you open Windows whilst operating on the mac os) then your computer will be slowed down by the high RAM usage (running 2 OS's at the same time).

But overall I think it's a good deal (ik ben juist nog naar Fnac geweest, daar stond hij aan ~990€). I don't really like the new look but that's personal. Also, I think they've changed the computer's ports for the worse. I like using Garageband and using both my music input (guitar) and output (speakers) channel. Now those 2 have been combined. Put since I'm guessing you won't be using Garageband it isn't a problem for you.

PS Xillax, Apple has always marketed their products as "fun to work with", which is true btw, but they got iWork too and other srs bsn programs.
RIP Hokie

This Macbook in the ad is not the newest macbook with the new look but the 1 generation older macbook with the old design. You know it because of the 2.13GHz processor and you can check it here http://www.everymac....ex-macbook.html.

I prefer the old look but it doesn't have the nice glass trackpad with the multi-touch gestures and the unibody design. Also this model comes with Leopard when the new OS from Apple is Snow Leopard. I too run Leopard on my iMac but I'm thinking of upgrading it to Snow Leopard since it only costs 30e.

You can buy yourself Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 and it costs 105e or Apple iWork for 80e that has the counterpart of Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I had the iWork trial and it was very nice to use, you'll get it too if you buy the Macbook. If you already have a Microsoft Office license for Windows I suggest you to install it on your Boot Camp (Windows) partition like I did and use that. Sure you need a Windows license too. Also there are free options like Openoffice and NeoOffice that work on a Mac and can replace Microsoft Office. Generally talking about the software for Mac you will be able to find all Windows counterparts that usually feel even better than the ones you're replacing but if you do CAD you're out of luck. I don't think you do since you didn't mention it so no worries.

if you install Windows on the Macbook along with OS X you will be able to play SOF2 MP Test easily with it and some of the newer games with lower settings. Here are some benchmarks done with that 9400m gfx http://www.notebookc...-G.11949.0.html. You'll be able to play some Windows-only games on OS X with Crossover but it costs a little and the performance is not as good as running the game natively on Windows.

Anyway, the Macbook in the ad is reasonably priced and I think it is a good deal for 699e. I would buy it too if I was looking for a low-cost laptop.

P.S. Once you switch to OS X I don't think you will miss Windows just like Charles told. :)
