A massive Icelandic volcano has spewed so much ash into the sky that it has darkened Europe to the point where airline flights have been cancelled. To make matters worse the volcano has not slowed down and is showing no signs of stopping, at least in the immediate. Northern Europe was blanketed with a thick and dark ash cloud that shut down air traffic. It was expected that high wind levels would continue spreading the ash clouds throughout much of Europe.
The northern European airline flights will remain cancelled until it is determined that jet engines will not suck in particles from the ash cloud. The eruption took place near a popular hiking ground in southern Iceland. This is the fifth eruption of the Ejfjallajokull glacier since Iceland was settled in the ninth century. It is the fifth largest glacier in Iceland. It would surprise some to know that Iceland sits on one of the great volcanic hot sports in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that has frequent eruptions.
Airline flight cancellations were included in Great Britain, 700 miles from the Icelandic volcano. Some experts estimate that flight disruptions could take up to 6 months. United States air carriers cancelled roughly half of their trans-Atlantic flights. A total of 165 of 300 flights were cancelled and a similar number was expected for Friday. This will also cause negative economic impact for European tourism and the United States airline industry, which has been in a long term slump.
London is the most popular European destination for airline flights and that is one of the cities that have suffered the biggest impact from the Icelandic volcanic ash. The air lines already suffered from a brutal winter in the United States in which many flights were cancelled. This, coupled with a stubborn recession, has continued to plague the airline industry.
