Good morning,
You got 2 options to plug it in and make it works,
By Usb Cable, or else a Network Cable - the preferable option for everyone it's the Network cable.
I don't really know what ur provider VPN Options, Also depends on the type of your modem and connection ADSL/Cable...
if you're using a Cable connection The best option is L2TP connection, but probably u'r provider will prefer to let u use PPTP.
Adsl will go through PPPOE, but leave the protocols for now, ask first ur network provider how does it work on ur place mate, could be even directly to the infrastructure means dynamic ip, thats something u have to make sure
After you'r modem is connected to the pc, and you got the info, the way is easy to install a new connection,
if you need any help with it ur welcome to contact me,
Good luck with it !

Alright lets try something simple, Go to start up & type -> cmd
and then type it ping www.google.com,
let's see you even can get any response/pings.
OH btw u said something & I didn't notice that anyway u you can connect to websites when ur connected by the router instead directly to the pc?
