Lately there are more players having the same error.
So I thought it was time to make a topic about it.
I used the answers from several users on this forum, so all credits to them.
It's about this problem:



What to do when this happends?


Solution 1


First of all before doing the other steps mentioned below, put your Sof2 folder on Desktop:



After you have done this, check if your .exe file is named correctly.
Your .exe must be called sof2mp.exe




sof.exe, sof2mptest.exe, sof2.exe, S.O.F.exe and all others are wrong!




Solution 2


Did solution 1 not work out for you?
Try to not download drivers yet (which is the last option) since that might be unnecessary and it might also crash other games.

In case you have downloaded ctf_update.pk3 and you want to open Sof2 without Fairplay, it could be you still have the standard .exe (which is in the normal setup).
You can download an improved .exe (which the most also know as the red icon.exe).
The red icon is also shown in the images here above.

Once you have downloaded this file, replace it with your old .exe
If you did it correctly, the gray icon turned into the red one.
But sometimes it doesn't refresh, so don't be afraid.
Try to start Sof2 now and check if it works.


Solution 3


Are you still having this problem?
Then we have to do a little more work, but hey you want to play sof after all!

Now it turns out to be your drivers.
A driver (shortly explained) is specific software that makes the connection between hardware and the operating system.
It could be that you got drivers that are that new, that they won't work anymore on Sof2 (since Sof2 is old).
Mostly this happends after downloading updates for your graphic card via Windows Update.
But there could be a lot of reasons, too many to name now.



You have to check what graphic card you got.
So far we have only solutions for:

- If you got Nvidia: http://www.demobase....-191xx-drivers/

- If you got ATI: http://www.demobase....-105-or-higher/


Everything is correctly explained there (big thanks to Samuel and Yankowich).
However many users did notice that the program nHancer doesn't work anymore on start-up.
If this is the case (which is frustrating), you could try 2 things but it's not guaranteed:


- If you recently downloaded updates for your graphic card via Windows Update, you'll have to do a System Restore to a date BEFORE you downloaded these updates.
This turns out to be the best solution.
Also uninstalling your drivers and installing the older version of the driver should also work.
Be sure to back-up all the necessary files and/or settings you have made!

It's your own responsibility to do this!


- For NVIDIA only: nowadays there is another program called NVIDIA Inspector.

There are no experiences posted here yet on Demobase about the usage of this program.
So watch out (just like the System Restore!) before adjusting wrong settings!
Ask a friend if you don't know how to use it.
Try to adjust the settings which were described in Samuel's topic in this program to the correct ones.
But to remention, this step is the last option you should try since nobody has posted yet if this has worked.

hi guys, i bought my self a new laptop. not that great one but ok for playing sof i guess. thats the laptop

its been almost 3-4 years since i played sof so havent really followed the forums etc but i cant run it on that computer. it has win8

and it just starts and then there is black screen - "loading"  liek it should be and for 20 sec its just like that and then it crashes.

i dl-ed  new drivers and i run it as win XP.

 

anyone has a good solution? would be nice to play again.

Sof is dead Lynx. I believe dragging your SOF2 folder to your desktop would fix this problem though?

 

 

Also download sof from here: caserun.com/games

 

don't download an installer for it, run it straight from the folder you download.

Its me havent touched sof2 in 6-8 years or so, thought it would be fun to try it again,

kind of lost interest in fixing the crashing issue tho. Tried downloading the folder alone

from caserun, same issue.

Edit: I got it fixed, i was trying to figure out what was wrong with my graphic card so i reinstalled windows and drivers etc.

After that sof2 just worked, didnt even need the red icon.
