there were 2 or 3 mods(more like separate games build on doom2) that allowed real multiplayer too
I played one called Zdaemon and it was awesome, you could play FFA on specially designed maps, there were graphics packs and stuff quite dead now though. Dunno if other mods still have some traffic and master servers running.

gamemakers are scared to be creative in making games like in the 90's because they are affraid it might flop. so they just play it on safe and make the same games over and over again.
