I never had windows7, dunno what space/performance issues I might be facing

I have a small Seagate Barracuda ST380817AS 80gb, 8mb cache, 7200rpm
would that drive be sufficient space/performance wise for win7/8 or would I have to invest again :/
I'm thinking of buying one more drive regardless specs around 500gb/7200rpm
Is this drive worth keeping at all or should I sell it for like 10$ :P ?

I'd suggest buying a larger drive. Both windows 7 and 8 require 16 GB for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit.

To be honest I don't see you having an issue running Windows 7. I heard 8 isn't all that great as it makes it harder for smarter people to understand from what I hear.

In terms of windows 7, I think it's a good OS. It doesn't take much computing and it runs smoothly without as many issues as in Vista. But still, I suggest you get a bigger hard. Time to upgrade man, 80 GB? Really? That's like my music file...

Talking about stupid questions drfunk... hahaha

Just install your win7 on that HDD and try, it's big enough. Why would that harddisk not be good enough??
No1 can decide this for you, it depends what you're planning to use it for.
If 80GB is big enough for you, what's the problem?

If you want to upgrade you should look for a nice SSD which I can help you with picking a decent one.

edit; I got a SSD as well, improves your loading times greatly and makes your pc react a lot faster. Great updgrade moneywise. A good SSD will give you more bang for your buck than a better CPU in most cases. Plus you can always instal it in your 'future' new pc. Just buy part for part and in a few months you could upgrade the mainboard/CPU etc.

I'm using the Crucial M4 SSD for like a year now and I am happy with the performance. Boot time is very quick as well as any interactions on my desktop. It doesn't affect much else.

Here is a SSD heirarchy chart for reference:

http://www.tomshardw...ark,3269-6.html

Scroll down to see the "tiers". Anything in Tier 1, 2 or 3 is going to be a big improvement over a regular HD. Also note that the 256gb is the best size to go for, they have the best performance in each model (better than 128 and 512 even). So it's better to get 2 256 and run them in RAID then one single 512 I believe. I recommend the Samsung 830, Mushkin Chronos Deluxe or Intel 520.

Interesting ways to avoid getting one single hard drive with all the space for immediate budget?

yea i was reading about hdd drives and then someone said his level loading went from 120s to 2s with sdd, so I thought maybe sdd is a viable option to explore.

radical thanks for chart, but I guess top3 tiers will be too much for my pocket :P

Whatever you end up with, I recommend using this guide to get the best performance when installing Windows:

80GB HDD is sufficient for your purposes if you remember to keep your C: clean. If you go for SSD, buy at least a 120GB drive. I'm telling you this because a 60GB SSD was too small for me. Now I have a 256GB Samsung 830.
