Hi guys, i put this together and posted this on Oceania, thought i'd post it here. The analysis is a little simplistic since soccer (football) isn't Australia's number one sport and some people don't appreciate it here. So do not flame if you are all euro football pr0s ! Agree/disagree, all opinions welcome!
Group A 1. France 2. Mexico 3. Uruguay 4. South Africa
France has a lot of class but struggled to qualify, i can't see them slipping up when it really counts with players such as Gourcuff, Toulalan, Anelka, Henry, Evra etc. Mexico and Uruguay will scrap it out for the second spot, but i think Mexico has enough talent to make it through. South Africa is terrible with the exception being Steve Pienaar.
Group B 1. Argentina 2. South Korea 3. Nigeria 4. Greece
With Argentina being the exception, this group is pretty wide open. Argentina has incredible talent, boasting arguably the world's best player, Lionel Messi; with a supporting cast including Inter front man Diego Milito, Walter Samuel and Martin Demichelis. Nigeria will be disadvantaged after losing John Obi Mikel, but they will be tough to beat. South Korea are incredibly even and hard working, and will be solid enough to progress. Greece is an aging team with its limitations, will struggle to make to the final 16.
Group C 1. England 2. USA 3. Slovenia 4. Algeria
Again, only one real standout team in this group, being England. Perennial underachievers, they have a solid defence including Chelsea stopper John Terry, a talented group of midfielders with names such as Lampard and Gerrard. Up front, they have one of the most sublime center forwards they have produced, Wayne Rooney. If he is fit, England are a threat to go all the way. USA should make it through the group, after a solid 3-1 win against Australia.
Group D 1. Germany 2. Australia 3. Serbia 4. Ghana
A very tough group for us Aussies.. Germany typically start slow but are an incredibly polished unit with lots of class all over the park. Serbia is a very big, physical side, boasting premier league stars Vidic and Ivanovic, and also the 2 metre tall Zigic up front. Ghana is very even with many French Ligue 1 players, but will be hurt with the loss of Michael Essien. We will have to play at our absolute best to make it through, we have the experience and the possession game to stand up, but we don't have a dominant front man, relying on our midfielders to push up and score, which could pose problems against the accomplished defences of Germany and Serbia.
Group E 1.Netherlands 2. Denmark 3. Cameroon 4. Japan
Apart from the Netherlands, another wide open group. The Dutch have incredible talent, even though Arjen Robben is injured. They will easily cruise through this group, though how far they go after that is debatable. The Danes have just enough talent to scrape through over Cameroon, that game will probably decide the second place. Nicklas Bendtner will be looking to star on the world stage and stamp himself as a real A grader. Cameroon are pretty light on for depth apart from Samuel Eto'o, and Japan; for all their endeavour, do not have the talent to succeed.
Group F 1. Italy 2. Paraguay 3. Slovakia 4. New Zealand
Italy is the standout team, the defending champions. Even though their team is quite old, it's experience and class cannot be understated. Paraguay could be the suprise packet of the cup, they have some good talent and home wins over Brazil and Argentina showed their potential. City front man Roque Santa Cruz will be key to their goal scoring avenue. Slovakia do not have the depth to progress, and New Zealand will be lucky to salvage a point.
Group G 1. Brazil 2. Portugal 3. Ivory Coast 4. North Korea
The so called 'Group of Death'. Brazil and Portugal are totally world class teams, with Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo some names to throw about. Both SHOULD progress, on talent alone. However if either are off their game, the Ivory Coast will be breathing down their necks, as Didier Drogba's men will be hellbent on proving themselves on the big stage. North Korea, unlucky group. Not a chance. Maybe some karma for all their nuclear weaponry. The top place will be hotly contested, as the winner will avoid a likely match up againt Spain, so the Portugal v. Brazil game is set to be one of the more entertaining of the tournament.
Group H 1. Spain 2. Switzerland 3. Chile 4. Honduras
Spain is a hot favourite for the title, and rightly so. Arguably the best midfield and attack in the world, with players such as Torres, Villa being servied by Xavi, Fabregas, SIlva, Alonso, Iniesta. Solid at the back with Puyol also. The Swiss have just enough to edge out the Chileans, with their game deciding the runner up of the group. Honduras will be happy for the experience to make up the numbers, similarly to New Zealand.
