It was released in North America on 6 September 2011, with the PlayStation 3 version available via the PlayStation Store.
No rugby union game has been produced for four years since Rugby 08, which was also developed by HB Studios, then under the EA Sports label. It was announced on 29 March 2010 that The Rugby Forum and its members, would help HB studios gain a better understanding of what the general rugby-supporting public wanted in the new title.
For the first time in the series of rugby games developed by HB Studios, the title will have a player editor, but it is limited to attributes and names only.

These are players who want to be the best of the best, and experience the game like no other. Well what if we told you there was a realistic way to experience Battlefield 3 in a way that’s never been done before? In a world first, a unique FPS simulator has been built that runs a pre-release copy of the game, and includes a full 360-degree environment.

Centred on the world’s first, portable omni-directional treadmill (designed by Swedish company MSE Weibull) the simulator lets you control the movements of a Battlefield 3 character with your own body. Other key technology employed includes: 12 paintball markers that allow the player, in real time, to feel the enemy gunfire experienced in the game; a wireless gun system; ambient LED lighting; and an Xbox Kinect camera hack. Ten infra-red motion tracking cameras continually monitor the real-time movements of the gamer on the omni-directional treadmill. This data is sent to the PC running Battlefield 3 to control the speed and direction of the in-game character.
