Not even going to try and come up with top 20, but the best single-player experiences must be Deus Ex and Mafia, story-wise that is, this isn't a matter of an opinion. If the story isn't such a big deal its probably fallout 1 and 2 or baldur's gate 2. Of course Half-life was amazing as well.

What comes to the older games like Master of Orion and UFO, of course they were awesome back then but not sure if they were that immersive. Alan wake was suprisingly good example of fine storytelling in a game. While multiplayer games only make you angry, single-player can actually sometimes be fun, they just take so much time. I mean its fine to play an hour of sof once a week, but if you try playing some single-player an hour once a week you lose interest in the story.

Everytime you evaluate a story; like a book, legend, movie, comic it is a matter of subjective opinion lol. Obviously there are some elements that you USUALLY find in entertaining/popular stories, but you really can not quantify it.

Dialogs were solid, often complex and funny(talking bout original English version). Plus you could impact the story and characters so in a way it was a semi-open ending. It doesn't get much better than that in PC games. Also whole setting/idea was appealing to me. So it often a matter of personal opinion. People who don' like s-f/post apocalyptic setting- they perhaps wouldn't find the story interesting at all.

btw I've seen Dues Ex on many all-time/top lists for games I'm surprised you are the first person here to mention it.

Heh, yeah was more or less joking on that opinion thing. What comes to fallout, sure the stories are good, but in general I didn't find them story-driven, the whole open world -thing, side-quests, do whatever you want -mentality was what I loved about fallout, million ways to do things, the characters can be so different from being unable to speak properly to solving confrontations by intellect and discussion. But yeah the first deus ex, was a massive thing and still is, I highly recommend it. I think system shock 1 and 2 are really respected as well, but can't say much for those since I never really played either.

mw3 campagin was way better than first ones, more mission variety, longer missions etc.
battlefield campaign is rly good too

I hear Trigger is better than Cross, but I've never played Trigger though

play it on a ds emulator if your comps good enough as it has alot more extra content than the original on snes (as well as some shit hinting to cross)

no$gba (torrent/warez for donate version)

Mafia's story was just awesome, especially when you consider the game was released in 2002. 10 years have gone by and current games have considerably worse story lines, just pathetic. Mafia II was a huge letdown for me, game technique, visual look, map etc. were pretty good but the story itself was just bleh, especially the ending. The story had a huge potential but they just threw it out of the window.

I saw somebody mentioning Wolfenstein 3d in this topic, that game was just pure gold. I still wire up my old Macintosh every once in a while to play a few levels. ;d
