Ping (=latency time in milliseconds) is depending ONLY on the distance between you and the server (network distance ofc, as packets arent flying straight in the air). Basically if you live in Amsterdam and play on a server hosted in Amsterdam, your ping will be very low, close from 0.
But a low ping doesnt mean you will not lag. Lag is dependent of the quality of your connexion on one side and the quality of server connexion on the other side. so you can have a low ping with a laggy gaming.
This is fancy today to try to get the lowest ping and it seems ppl are happy only if their ping is lower than 50 regardless of the quality of the connexion and hardware.
But what is mostly ignored is that the game engines are compensating ping differences between players so theres basically no difference between a 20 and a 120 ping as its mostly compensated by the game prediction on one side and as on other side we talk about a difference of 100 milliseconds (= 0,1 second) when a human fast reflex takes at least 1 full second.
But as ping became a commercial arguments, many companies and manufacturers are conforted in their choice to let players think that ping is THE thing that matters.
Ping is only about geographic distances and companies advertising about "low pings" are just raping customers as you can NEVER guarantee a low ping as it is directly linked to your geographic location. If I was american and renting a server to lowpings.net I could complain cuz my ping would be probably around 250-300
So if you ever plan to rent a server dont focuse on ping only, just test the gaming experience, if you dont "feel laggy" and dont see enemies shaking if not freezing. I used to be a customer of those companies claiming "frags not lags, low pings, etc" and without giving names I was really disappointed by their services : either they were expensive for a reasonable/good quality, either they were cheap for a poor quality (if not simply doing illegal hosting).
just dont get abused by marketing words, try the servers yourself and ask current customers about their experience before renting in any company.

As a GSP I wanted to make something clear as its obviously confuse for many players, so just for the info :

I disagree, in my opinion the value of my ping is very important. I feel the difference between 50 and 10 msec latency when playing SoF2 and it influences my play alot, quite often being the difference between killing or being killed. The mean reaction time for young adults is 160-190 msec, not "at least a full second" (source: Wiki).
Your ping is not only dependant on the geographic/network distance between client and server. The quality of the routing is very important.

Hate to bring CS in, but I used to play with guy from UK in SWE server(from one of the best hosters around here) and he had around ping 50 which is actually quite big(play cs and you see) in most of servers, but that wasn't the case, he was able to play with no problems while some servers gave him shitty lags, perhaps even at lower pings (40-45)
even at sof2, I sometimes feel some ping 70 servers better than 40....

I agree, since no matter what ping you have, even with 300ping, if you shot at him it will hit him, even if 0.3 seconds later he's behind a wall. But what is mostly ignored is that the game engines are compensating ping differences between players so theres basically no difference between a 20 and a 120 ping as its mostly compensated by the game
Though it's definitely nicer to have a lower ping since you see the enemy a split second earlier :E
Lowpings offers 6 American locations. If I was American and renting a server to lowpings.net I could complain cuz my ping would be probably around 250-300
Either way, in my opinion what is needed the most is GOOD HARDWARE, so that client's don't get too much (packet)loss/bad bullet registration. Really, I'd rather play with 100ping in a server with next to no loss than play with 10 ping in a server with a lot of packet loss. (lowpings have a lot of loss if you ask me (A))
