@Pep, don't discount what Foxdie said regarding how the rules of our usual sof2 wars need to be changed to make the game more enjoyable first and foremost, and I doubt that would ever happen with most of the players playing today.
I still don't think it's worth it, even after what you said. Mainly because I don't see me coding anything sof2 related is an improvement of my programming abilities. This is quite a odd statement to make, usually made by people who don't have any experience in the world of computer science. Figuring out some hooks, connecting statements, and fiddling with the code of an outdated Quake engine would be pretty waste of time if you ask me when there are so many other engines out there worth learning, particularly OpenGL (broader 3D graphical spectrum), Crysis, etc.
The underestimated DDoS as you mentioned, is virtually impossible to be fully secure against, you realize this? Packet flooding isn't something easily prevented due to the fact that online multiplayer games send thousands if not millions of UDP packets between players very quickly, similar to the flooding that'd be used by several different computers to flood one hosted server's IP address. This is the most common form of DDoS and probably what Max was dealing with. There are some measures of security, such as RAID protection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID), which is really just a counter-measure for DDoS to prevent the server from being blindsided and shutting down or overflowing, not an actual prevention of attack. You realize that in order to get rid of DDoSers, you probably have to get rid of all potential threats from being able to access the servers we play on, meaning completely banning all the computers Butcher owns, pretty much banning all of the 1fx kids and their known IP addresses as well as their mobile phones, and most other hackers/known server crashers/etc.
EDIT: Overall, I think what you are asking for is a collaborated effort by the entire Demobase and Sof2 community to re-invent the game. But you don't want that to happen and nobody here suggests anything similar except for maybe a few people. Me, Foxdie, pretty sure Fleim and Rocket, and most of the others I'd like to mention are gone already playing League of Legends competitively or working full-time because we all grew up over the last decade.

In my opinion, advertising a 10+ year old game will not work as efficiently as you all are saying it would. Imagine it yourself, and instead of saying "advertise it!", give us an idea of how YOU would advertise sof2 to gain more players? "Come join a glitchy fast paced game where most of the players know every position and would never change the rules of the game to make it more fast paced and fair, but rather enjoy a slower paced 30-50 minute game that, for the majority of the time, is played on a single map." I just don't see it working out, and advice like "advertise it" is completely mis-guided and not supplied with any evidence as to how it would potentially even possibly work to the littlest extent.
